Harvey Spencer Lewis: A Mystic, A Magician, or just a PsychicResearcher?

My researches are unveiling a entire new aspect of the real work and objectives of HSL, former AMORC Imperator for all Grand Lodges and Temples around the world...

A Personal Account

I must confess that my experience with AMORC at my first years was fantastic! Everything was new in my twenties and I learned to love my Master Monographs (at that time simply called Rosicrucian Monographs). Every week I was waiting with anticipation for some new revelation about the Laws of Nature and how can I be in synch with the Cosmos, the infinite Mind, in everything!

Off course, this entire process speeds up my mind in search for the realms beyond my mundane experience and I loved it with all my soul. But after the 9 Degree Temple I felt a jolt in my comfort zone. I realized that I should rich something, some level of consciousness, but nothing permanent really happened. The Cosmic Consciousness was still a flitting experience. Most of the “exercises” given in the 9th Temple Degree were totally different from the rest of the previous study and the Order didn’t give enough information about their purpose or even their usage. Seems they want, deliberately, to hide the whole thing and show us just the tip of the iceberg leaving us without a clue of what to do with all those exercises or "experiments" as they usually call them. As a result I needed to seek answers elsewhere, in other esoteric schools. That was the first blow. It shaked my confidence in the school and put myself as an observer, less involved with the ‘climate’ of the Order and I started to analyze what was going on. But I am a persistent person, I decided to continue my journey, going deeper to see the whole picture.

Then after five years of study, finishing the 9T, I entered in some kind of new phase of studies. The volume of material supplied for the 10T, 11T and 12T degrees were overwhelming. It took me 20 years of my life to complete the “Higher Degrees”. Definitely, that was a time to evaluate was is going on! What I've got and what I have achieved? First of all, one thing I noticed from some time in this level; the content supplied in the monographs was a total waste of time and were fabricated to extend my membership ad infinitum only. All the remaining information delivered in the monographs can be easily found in any bookshop, which as I say, amount around 90% of the "Illuminati" section. There is only one other thing that I noticed that really pissed me off. The study material was unordered and fragmented. I noticed that because I have a very accurate track of my monographs and its relevant contents and I have submitted that “index” to several reviews along those years. I wanted to make sense of the puzzle scheme of my studies. But all in vain… I really got down to a conclusion that the material was collated without any esoteric, alchemical or magical framework, just for the sake of keep the student amused with so many things… and the Mystery.

Because I didn't wanted to take this personally, I cared to talk with other "High Degree" members, to share my conclusions and listen their opinions. The majority totally agree with me saying that is the reason they are totally demotivated with their studies and do not want to get involved with the organization anymore.

The bottom line was that AMORC worked just a little bit over the exercises and experiments done on the ‘Lower Degrees’ and particularly on the 9T recommending to repeat them once and while and combining them differently. Some brief reference to the Elementals like Fire and Water, reference to clairvoyance using water as a replacement for a crystal ball, etc.. But the lack of a clear guideline in this entire section called "Illuminati" was blatant. The real focus of the entire exercise was place into was called “Esoteric Hierarchy Contact”, an experiment based on HSL work of creating an Astral construct of a “Cathedral of Souls” were all members should commune to receive guidance and psychic healing. “Meetings” on the “Cathedral of Souls” are scheduled regularly with specific sessions for different purposes. Members of this section also receive special orientation to report to the Supreme Grand Loja if they “receive” messages or visions related to the organization. This is considered a special service to the Imperator. At certain point of the studies, the monographs started to talk like the “Illumination” was about to happen at any time soon to the student, until a point where they drop the subject entirely focusing in totally different things. I had a close friend of mine, a bit more advanced in monographs than I, that at the end of this process suffered a nervous breakdown, which he never recovered completely.

Looking Around in this Blog

I started this blog somewhat in hope that someone in the AMORC high echelons or the High Council (or should I say board of directors in the new business model?) would reflect on my clues and change the direction the organization is heading. I called out for hints in the timeline where HSL was elaborating his plan to develop AMORC even further. If you look at this blog index (at the right side) you will find many interesting advances from HSL to expose AMORC students to the Western Esoteric arts.

o HSL Opening the CR+C Vault in USA 1918.
o The use of the Hermetic Rosicross lamen.
o The use of Dark Mirrors with selected members of the 12th Degree.
o Does A.M.O.R.C. Prepare the Student to Become an Adept?

What All of that Tell Us?

We found that Harvey Spencer Lewis (HSL), as a publicist and first Imperator (Supreme Grand Master of AMORC) found many ways to promote his idea of an organization dedicated to de study and development of psychic abilities, such as Telepathy, Psychometrics, Clairvoyance, Astral Projection as well some of the mind powerful abilities such as Creative Visualization, Memory Enhancements, Subconscious Programming, etc.. Off course, in those areas HSL was up-to-date with the most recent advancements rivaling Silva Mind Control™, (very popular at those times). HSL also resourced to the wonder of the mysterious East and old Rosicrucian Tradition to create a seductive image for his new organization, AMORC.

Exactly when I was meditating on that, that the entire picture came like a revelation! I was contemplating AMORC history and their study materials (the monographs), when every part of the puzzle seems to felt into place. Them I came to a realization that the HSL stories like his ‘initiation’ in a Rosicrucian temple of the continental initiates in France in some unknown chateau, the alleged CR+C vault found in the Pacific coast, the possession of old Rosicrucian manuscripts that he “translated”, alchemical transmutations and all this stuff never happened. That kind of arguments was easy to use in the beginning of the 19th Century, where people do not have access to document sources and travel was difficult. But today in the world of Internet, they cannot stand anymore. The public information level has been raised to such level that façade like that is not working anymore. But removing the smoking screen, we can see what HSL was heading to. What he really wanted was to expand his psychic researches, started years before the AMORC concept came into life. The Order was actually part of his strategy to extend his researches to a grand scale, including almost the entire world. He also wanted to adventure in the realms of the mind in a totally different approach. He wants people willing to participate, seduced by his offer, promoting better results. That formula was AMORC. A psychic experiment vested in the robes of an ancient Rosicrucian Order, with root in the wisdom of the ancient Egypt! That was really great! A Master Plan.

The Master Plan

It is obviously that there was a plan, or a plan that unfolds as it went. The first stage was to create the nucleus, done by a direct “Master”-disciple relationship, between HSL and his first students. The first ‘teachings’ were transmitted in a temple-lodge setting in a Masonic quasi style. After some build up and publicity, he decided to create a 5 year course, structured in 9 ‘degrees’. He borrows the grade terminology from the rising Golden Dawn, to use the momentum, and launched himself into it. In 9 years the first team of ‘initiates’ was ready and the organization need to feed them with something new to keep them going.

That was the rising of the second stage of the Master Plan, the creation of some kind of Inner Order, or High Degrees. The 10th, 11th and 12th Degree were created and delivered. But this time the plan was conceived to fix the small amount of time to keep the students paying their fees. For the contents he resourced to Theosophy and other esoteric material obtained from the passing and appropriate time of the F.U.D.O.S.I., even the ascended Masters (KUT-HU-MI, Moria-El and Saint Germain where called to help!). The degrees need to be extended enough to not require any other level any time soon, giving the organization time to breath. Thus the 10th degree was designed to include 250 monographs approximately; the 11th degree to include approximately the same number and the 12th with around 350 monographs! Considering receiving a pack of four monographs a month, it would take 212 months or 17 years to complete the new stage. That time enough!

But people are persistent and they got there as well. And now? It is the time for the crown of the Master Plan. Recently AMORC devised a new level of monographs (their source seems bottomless), The Planes or also called the Ordo Summun Bonvn. The actual number of monographs is unknown but they also changed the entire system of monograph delivery. Now the new and old members are receiving only a pack of 2 monographs per month, which will double the time spam for the entire system, requiring the new student their entire life span of affiliation do get the samething as I got. Now AMORC also have guarantee of a life-time fees from its members. That was sad but a real smart marketing move! Strategy conceived by the New Management.

In the overall picture, despite the Master Plan, AMORC did a significant contribution to the acceptance of the para-physical side of the human nature, as well as the methods to manage our mental powers. Their system also demonstrate that with persistence, common individual are able to incorporate into their daily routine exercises and practices to expand their consciousness without relaying in any guru or eastern techniques. Also prove, beyond the shadow of doubt that there is an interest in the metaphysical side of the reality we live in and related things. That people are seeking beyond the appearances and they are willing to sacrifice significant parte of their lives to achieve Enlightenment. That’s the best part of it. Should AMORC turn to its good side, incorporating the authentic Rosicrucian Tradition (Kabbalah, Theurgy, Astrology and Alchemy - the arcane sciences)? There is much that it can be done with such infrastructure around the world. It up to them to see what they really can do for humanity.

  1. Hello - I found your blog last night and have really enjoyed catching up on the posts. I am giving consideration to joining AMORC, as I am starting to believe that a graduated course of instruction would be better than all of the book learning I am doing these days.

    Do you think the modern AMORC is still a reasonable institution?

    1. Dear Michael,

      Depending on your previous studies is my answer. For instance, if you are new in the field of esoteric studies, AMORC is an excellent entry point. The only disadvantage is that you need a very long time to get the basics - something around 20 years!

      As a solution, you can catch up assessing the vast literature online to get started and be prepared to get into an organization at higher level of studies.

      Another aspects are related with your preferences in terms of practice. If you are akin to Eastern practices I would recommend S.R.F. - Self Realization Fellowship, which teaches Kryia Yoga covering the meditation basics and advanced levels.

      But if you prefer ritual magic, look at the Paul Foster Case books, particularly an entire published course in 2 volumes of his Occult Foundations. B.O.T.A. - Builders of the Adytum would be a preferred choice for a magical/Rosicrucian school.

  2. Ok, im greatly greatly demotivated regarding joining amorc....golden dawn website kind of turned me off....can you please suggest what organization should join ? Im realy very interested in the occult. please do suggest a suitable school to join?

  3. Thank you so much for posting this. I found it after a long time searching, but it's exactly what I was looking for. This is important information for knowledge seekers who have come across a similar path. I would love to ask your advice on some more in depth questions regarding this post if possible.

    1. Thanks Christian,

      Keep posting your ideas and suggestions for our discussions here.

  4. Hello,

    As I grew up in vienna - I know the founder of AOR very well - he used many names and drove quite a few people insane; in his book he praises himself and doesnt give a clew about magic, rosicrucians e.g. ...

    I definitly cannot recommend AOR at all, also not the fake AAORRAC - a former amorc group;

    Amorc had its time - I studied the monographs 1-12 temple degree - but in addition also I lived in india to study for the yoga acharya and red about every book available around mystical, esoterical subjects;

    The hints given in the 12th temple degree / amorc monographs - are phantastic - but I guess someone unexperienced in meditation - would consider it to be worthless "filling" material:

    for example monograph 32 and 33 T12 - cosmic vibrations - it is essential to understand the difference of psychic projection - where you project the consciousness to a place or person - or cosmic attunement - where you tune into a vibration ... so to speak ....

    the amorc monographs - give you hints - in an advanced stage it is not about studying some henoch scripts, kabbalistic letters or symbols and more - but establish a permanent "link" to the cosmic; exercises like the projection, the assumption or cosmic attunement work for me;

    I dont know whether I would recommend amorc membership nowadays as many groups seem to have only few members ...it takes at least 20 years to go through the monographs and it is questionable - if in 20 years from now - all these groups will still exist; but without initiations, study groups, rituals - the monographs will be red in a different way;

    it might be for those - similar to me - who are willing to study all sorts of teachings and traditions; All I can confirm is that amorc monographs helped me a lot - in addition to my study of yoga, ayurveda; Bardon books, martial arts, zen;

    Also I could never get dependend on any group as my mind is extremly strong - I love to be independend and mastered also other traditions;

    internet does not help at all as most of the information is useless, I had very bad experiences with SOL - which is led by a former amorc member nowadays (steve tanham)... all golden dawn groups of today didnt convince me at all; in addition - unfortunately also yoga turns more and more into just a business;

    1. Care Frater Serapis,

      Thank you for your insightful comments. As you mentioned the T12, Master Monographs 32-33, I would like to recommend you to read my new post on the subject of the 12 Rosicrucian Paths, which certainly will be much of your interest:

      Visit: http://rutilusdiluculo-cmills.blogspot.com.au/2015/01/the-12-rosicrucian-paths.html.

    2. Dear Frater Serapis,

      Sorry about the delay to replay on your very interesting comment.

      A.O.R. – Interesting feedback on that organization. It got my interest and I received the introductory lessons, which focuses much on the positive thinking and nothing special. I gave up to continue my studies with them because it requires personal frequent attendance in Austria, what obviously I not able to comply as I leave in Australia. So I was lucky to escape of such a trap.

      12th temple degree / AMORC monographs hints – I totally agree with you. All that we are receiving in the higher degrees are HINTS, nothing else. HSL stated clearly in the Monographs and in the Rosicrucian Manual that he was not authorised to give full disclosure of the teachings to the students. Sometimes I think that was an excuse as he do not have access to such material. May his access to the FUDOSI documents was not so extensive as he would like to have… However, I disagree when you said that meditation skills are an essential requirement for advancement into the higher degrees. From my understanding most of the AMORC techniques are advanced VISUALIZATIONS, which can be extended using the Scrying technique. With Scrying, or Remote Viewing, the psychic or astral projection mix with the “travel into the spirit vision”. I tried it and work miracles with the 12T exercises.

      Cosmic Link – That’s a real interesting point to consider. The Cosmic Harmonization or Attunement is one of the AMORC higher points. Unfortunately that technique is not clear enough to allow positive results, because requires a lot a background practice, here I agree, with meditation and particularly the achievement of the Inner Silence. The Inner Silence can be achieved turning the mind’s attention from thoughts to the observer will free the consciousness from the mind chattering giving to the student space to turn the attention to inside. To the actual observer, your Inner Self. However, from my own experience, that’s can be achieved using the simple flame contemplation.

      Studying all sorts of teachings and traditions – I really have a sincere agreement with you because I follow the same path. I do not believe that a single organization or school holds the true path. On the contrary, I think each one have aspects of the path. Some of those aspects may help us others not. Some strike the cord of our ancient Inner Self knowledge and make some connections, other not.

      I totally agree with what you said: “Also I could never get dependend on any group as my mind is extremly strong - I love to be independend and mastered also other traditions; “

      SOL – Interesting, I also had a bad experience with that organization. While I was studying the Foundation Class lessons I had an intuition of looking at one of their books, I downloaded an ebook from Dolores Ashcroft-Nowicki, “The Door Unlocked”. Reading that book I was quite shocked by the revelation that their initiation was done via the mind melting with some of the Lords of Light. During the initiation the candidate need to accept of being a “seed” of implant from the Lord selected to be the student guide. The “seed” is implanted on “…top of the student’s head and it “moves’ to the middle brain, them to the early reptilian brain. From there it makes its way to the throat centre and finally lodges, usually in the heart, but sometimes in the solar plexus. It take a week or more to finally settle in place.” (Ashcroft-Nowicki, 2009). That really scared me to the wits and I immediately send my resignation to the system. I am wondering with other system do to us but do not reveal as they did.

  5. Also sorry about the delay on publishing your post (s). For a long time I was unable to access the posts waiting for my approval. Now everything is working fine.

  6. Check out Buddha at the Gas Pump he interviews many living spiritual teachers. One that I particular like is Rupert Spira he has a website check him out. Once you learn advaita vedanta you will see it as the core of all religions and what everybodys else is teaching it but in there own way and terminology.

  7. The Amorc Rosicrucian studies were obtained without permission from various Lodges in Europe during and after WW11 but were never called or known as AMORC. The true teachings are what everyone that has posted here need but will never obtain.Spencer Lewis did not know enough to put what he obtained into coherent order nor could he understand what he had come across.The discourses as read in convocations were far in advanced of their time just get an old copy from the early times.The true Rosicrucians are hidden.

    1. Care Frater (?),
      Could you provide the sources of your findings regarding "The AMORC Rosicrucian studies were obtained without permission from various Lodges in Europe during and after WWII but were never called or known as AMORC."

      Do you mind as well to clarify? From which Lodges? How those teachings were called?

      Your complimentary information will be welcome to our discussion here.

  8. Dear frater,

    Greetings in three points of the sacred triangle!

    In my opinion, AMORC can be still a good path to Western people. I also had contact with some Eastern paths like Suddhadharma and Kriya Yoga and they have some points that are not helpful to west side of the world.

    I have found your comments very interesting about AMORC only provides higher chakras awakening. My impressions would be almost entirely opposite to this. In fact, Kriya Yoga could also lead the practitioner to only increase higher chakras functioning.

    After some years doing regular Kriya practice, in a daily basis, I was almost unable to walk without a annoying sensation of feet off the ground. This is very annoying to us Western people. Then, I've figured out that SRF technique wasn't the genuine Kriya technique.

    Looks like Yogananda needed to change part of technique to make it easy to Western followers so that they could do it properly. There was a history told by indian monks that kept stay in Karar Ashram, by Satyananda guidance, about about Western people couldn't take deep breath at that time. They breathed really bad. Original Kriya breathing is done by nose, not by mouth, and there is a huge difference doing it the right way. I've only noticed it when I moved from SRF to Paramahansa Hariharananda group. It was one of the best things I ever did.

    Hariharananda (Kriya Org) was the last indian yogue that reached samadhi. He was also initiated by Yukteswar. Of course, none of SRF monks had reached it by breathing by mouth.

    Then, after I began to work with supposed correct Kriya technique, I felt stronger and firmly based on the ground. I talked to a indian monk about "feet off the ground" experience and he told me to do more and more mahamudra to balance the things. It could be required sometimes.

    AMORC exercise about breathing and concentrating in body parts has the same effect. So, looks like AMORC is providing a similar practice that leads to the same point. I had the same effect of "feet off the ground" after practicing this one in late 80's. AMORC also has its own meditation technique included in one of the first four degrees. It is exactly as Kriya meditation's style (with no thoughts).

    Some conclusions in the way they were registered in my writings are regarding to some problems with SRF and Suddhadharma techniques. I felt them really boring after some time with a strange feeling of vulnerability and "feet off the ground" annoying sensation. On the other hand, my personal experience of 30 years of AMORC and TOM membership and almost 10 years as Kriya Org follower are towards to consider AMORC, TOM and Kriya Org paths the ones that make me feel stronger, happy and financially stable. The material side of things, I suppose, is connected to rosicrucian mental creation technique.

    I don't know if those feelings mean something special in mystical path although they make easier living in this world of dualities.

  9. Dear Frater “Anonimous”, I would prefer to refer to real person’s name, but anyway I appreciate your comments and I would like to review some of them.
    First of all, I agree that AMORC is still a viable path into the Mysteries for the Westerns. However, I think it works more like a ground work preparation. The only serious restriction that AMORC has to fulfil their appropriate niche in the occult teachings is the time required to reach some working level on the Degrees; is too much time required for just a ground work preparation.
    Regarding SRF Kriya Yoga leading the practitioner to increase their higher chakras functioning, I disagree with your argument. I disagree based on my own practice (which doesn’t show the same effects) and based on the teachings from the lessons themselves. If you have received all the Kriya lessons , until Kriya 4, you are able to verify that all the lesson teaches methods of attune/awaken ALL CHAKRAS, from the base chakra (muladhara) until the Ajna chakra (third eye centre), with the exception of the Crown chakra. That’s why I also agree that the SRF teachings are not complete and I am really motivated by your comments to check on Hariharanda Kriya Yoga Institute to review my techniques, since we share the same lineage.
    Also I would like to comment on your observation that you become bored with the SRF practice and felt like having a “feet off the ground”. I think you got bored because your practice is not centred in deep concentration in the spinal tube during the Kriya practice, which if done properly will lead to the experience of the Inner Silence, a must for any real advancement into the Path. If you do not work out your concentration skills, will not mater which technique you are using, the boredom will come again. Only practicing with high concentration on the NOW you will be rewarded by inner realization.
    Another important aspect is that SRF gurus teach the students, during the Kriya Yoga initiation, that they may use the breath to help filling the Cool and Warm sensation flowing through the spinal tube. However, after the sensation is stablished, the student must leave the breath aside the turn into the Silent Kriya meditation feeling the flows of Prana energy only. This is required for the advanced levels of Kriya.

  10. Thank you, Fortunately I had intuitions and higher guidance to not getting involved with AMORC, but I took the free communications of the Cenacle de la Rose+Croix (Another way of teaching of the AMORC for my lower training) and just got accepted by the BOTA. I discorverd your blog today and I'm amazed how I can confirm, I'm not on the wrong path ... Your article about PFC and this one about HSL clear my mind and help me to go on the right side.
